Using water like it costs something

Farming takes a lot of water. Heat, uneven rain, and competing users make that harder every year. Better irrigation is not a slogan. It is how you keep a crop alive without draining the well.

Agriculture uses about 70% of the freshwater people withdraw. Poor irrigation wastes water, salts the soil, and runs up the power bill. Better systems usually mean:

• Similar yields with less water
• Lower pumping costs
• Soil that holds together
• A farm that can take a dry spell

That holds for a family plot and a large commercial block.

Methods that work

Drip. Water goes to the root zone through valves and tubes. Less evaporation, less runoff. Good for row crops, orchards, and vineyards. Many farms cut water use by about 60% versus flood.

Sprinklers and micro-sprinklers. Timed rainfall on uneven ground or dense plantings. Flow can be set by crop.

Soil moisture sensors. They tell you when the soil is actually dry, so you do not water on a calendar.
